While Northern may be considered by some as a young church, with our establishment in 1999, our life in the community goes further back. In fact, in our DNA as a church is the ability to do the seemingly impossible – like building a church in a day! 

On Saturday, 25 March 1911, more than 1,000 people came to watch 150 people including 60 carpenters, 22 plumbers and 30 painters from other churches in Melbourne converge on a block of land near Bell Station. From 7 am that Saturday until 10 pm with the light from the local Fire Brigade, the final touches were made. The following day, the Sunday service was held in the new building.

In the mid-1990’s a group of four Church of Christ congregations began earnest discussions about coming together to achieve more than they could by going it alone. On the 7^th November 1999, Northern Community Church of Christ held its first service.

In 2003 the Church commenced CareWorks, our community services arm, and in 2004 we moved to our current location at 81HighStreet. In 2018, CareWorks separated out and became an organisation with its own governance and fully independent financial responsibility.

Northern continues to explore how God might want us to continue using the resources we are blessed with to help people live their lives well and connect with their Creator. Through the potential redevelopment of our current site, we are working through what God would want us to do, to be a blessing to our community. While we have more questions than answers, we trust that God will reveal the right plans at the right time. While the next building project we possibly engage in will not be completed in a day, we believe with God’s help, we can do the seemingly impossible.
